Intro

Prime Video is Amazon’s subscription streaming service. Distinct from Amazon Prime Video, the Prime Video service offers unlimited streaming of Amazon original and exclusive films, series, and specials, plus live Friday Night Football from the NFL. Additionally, it comes with access to Amazon Channels, where users can add streaming from a selection of 100+ channels such as HBO and Showtime for separate monthly fees, and Amazon Prime Video (Rent or Buy), which allows users to rent or purchase films for offline viewing.

Best For

Putting together your own TV channels package from a choice of more than 100 channels without having to buy a cable subscription.

Pros

  • Access to hundreds of popular Amazon Original series
  • Amazon Channels lets users create their own package
  • Live NFL Friday Night Football

Cons

  • Offline viewing is limited unless you pay extra to rent or buy titles
  • Can’t be viewed outside the U.S.

Networks You Can Watch with Amazon

  • Boomerang
  • CBS All Access
  • Cinemax
  • Comedy Central Now

Top Programs on Prime Video

Amazon doesn’t state exactly how many films and programs it offers on Prime Video, although the number is clearly in the thousands. Prime Video allows unlimited streaming from a large range of genres, including Amazon Original series, exclusive shows, films, documentaries, stand up, specials, kids shows, and of course Friday Night Football. Through Amazon Channels, subscribers can get access to thousands (if not tens of thousands) of additional shows and films from other networks.

The list is long, but just as a taste here are the top Prime Video Original television series available for unlimited streaming through Prime Video:

  • Bosch
  • Catastrophe
  • Electric Dreams
  • Fleabag
  • Goliath
  • Homecoming
  • Mozart in the Jungle
  • New Yorker Presents
  • One Mississippi
  • Patriot
  • Red Oaks
  • Sneaky Pete
  • The Grand Tour
  • The Man in the High Castle
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • The Tick
  • Transparent

How it Works: Hardware and Devices

Prime Video doesn’t require any special equipment. To stream Prime Video, simply subscribe and login from any of the hundreds of compatible media devices, including:

  • Smart TVs
  • Blu-ray players
  • Set-top boxes (Roku, Google TV, TiVo, Nvidia Shield)
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Fire TV Stick
  • Game consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Wii)
  • Android devices (Prime Video app for Android phones and tablets)
  • iOS devices (Prime Video app for iPhone, iPad & iPod touch)
  • Fire phone
  • Fire tablets

Cloud Storage

Selected Prime Video titles are available for download, although the time period you have to view downloads varies by title. Separately, Amazon account holders can rent or buy titles for download through Amazon Prime Video, regardless of whether they have a Prime Video account. The following devices are compatible with Amazon Prime Video rentals and purchases:

  • Fire tablets (except Kindle Fire 1st Generation)
  • Fire phone
  • Android phones and tablets
  • iOS devices

Regional restrictions

Prime Video and Amazon Channels are available only in the United States and its territories. Amazon Prime Video offers titles for rent or purchase in many countries around the world. Prime Video and Amazon Channels subscriptions are unavailable outside the U.S.

Customer service

Okay, so Amazon’s not exactly known for its customer service, but when it consistently offers services that rank at the top of their field – such as Prime Video for streaming – it can get away with it where others maybe can’t. If you have issues with Prime Video, whether they be related to billing or technical matters, you can contact customer service through the Contact Us section of the Prime Video website. You’ll need to go through an automated system, answering questions about your issue, and following the prompts, to eventually get an answer or speak to a customer service rep by phone, email, or live chat.

Summary

Prime Video is typical Amazon: it blows away most of the competition by simply being bigger. The catch here is that it’s one of the most expensive streaming services, if we’re purely comparing services that offer streaming from a video library. But that library is simply huge, and it comes with the added advantage of adding Amazon Channels services as you wish. Depending how much you’re willing to spend, you can essentially use Amazon to build for yourself the equivalent of a cable package plus streaming: with hundreds of channels from Amazon Channels and thousands of films and series from Prime Video.
